Caregiver's Corner
Understand common changes in behavior and how to respond calmly and effectively.
Understanding and Responding with Compassion
Changes in memory, judgment, and perception can make communication difficult. A person with Alzheimer’s may repeat questions, misplace objects, or become disoriented. Patience and empathy can turn these moments into opportunities for connection.
Communicating Effectively
- Maintain eye contact and speak calmly.
- Use short, clear sentences and give one instruction at a time.
- Avoid arguing or correcting—redirect gently instead.
- Listen for emotion, not just words.
Managing Behavioral Changes
Alzheimer’s can cause agitation, wandering, aggression, or withdrawal. These behaviors are often expressions of fear or frustration.
- Identify triggers such as fatigue, hunger, or noise.
- Keep the environment calm and familiar.
- Redirect attention with music, photos, or gentle activity.
- Seek medical advice if symptoms worsen suddenly—sometimes an infection or pain is the cause.
