On December 26, 2022, our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather Vladimir Waldo Popovich passed away peacefully at the age of 102. Vladimir (also known by his middle name Waldo or Lolli) was born on April 23, 1920 and grew up in Boyle Heights with his parents, five sisters and four brothers in a three-bedroom house. His childhood sweetheart and future wife Florence lived on the same street. Waldo and Florence were married on August 19, 1944, and enjoyed sixty-two (62) years of marriage before her passing at the age of eighty-five (85) on July 29, 2006. Waldo fought in World War II, serving in telecommunications on the front lines. Following his military service, Waldo worked for the telephone company as a technician for approximately forty years. Always an entrepreneur, he ran his own telephone repair and parts business after retirement from the telephone company. Waldo and Florence lived in Whittier, California and raised three girls, Lynn, Karen and Lisa. He would make crepes every Sunday morning much to their delight. Waldo and Florence loved to travel, and he continued to travel after Florence’s passing including a safari to South Africa and a mule trip (in his late 80s) in Yosemite. Waldo has a living legacy of three daughters, Lynn Popovich, Karen Popovich Levyn and Lisa Popovich (John Porter), four grandchildren, Adam Levyn (Heidi Levyn), Stacy Levyn Rozen (Ricky Rozen), Emily Newton and Alexandra Newton, and four great grandchildren, Larkin Levyn, Anders Levyn, Mateo Rozen and Adrian Rozen. He lived a full and happy life especially with the love of his life Florence. Waldo’s motto was to stay strong and carry on, and to always finish the food on your plate.
