Sohbi Reynolds

<<< Return to Memory Wall

Sohbi Reynolds, 86, a true citizen of the world, passed away peacefully in the company of her daughters on March 23, 2026 over seven years after her Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, Sohbi’s life was defined by innovation, strength, compassion, determination, and a spirit of adventure. A true maverick, her career spanned an extraordinary range of pursuits. She began as a jet-setting flight attendant for two international airlines, later becoming the founder and president of a first-of-its-kind production company specializing in Japanese commercials, film, and television production in Hawai‘i and beyond.

She went on to serve as President of the Hawai‘i International Film Association, where she helped negotiate favorable business visa terms with U.S. Customs—benefiting an entire industry and the local economy. As a modeling agent, she opened doors to the Japanese market for countless “hapa” models, and she later worked as a real estate agent. In every role, her vision, drive, and generosity left a lasting impression on protégés, colleagues, and community members alike.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sohbi was deeply devoted to her family. As a mother, she was a “Tiger Mom” before the term existed, as her two successful daughters would attest. At the same time, she was warm and loving—spending countless hours with her grandchildren and traveling the world to visit Lia at every duty station. She found great joy in traveling the globe in search of good food and wine, as well as cooking for family, friends, and anyone fortunate enough to gather at her table.

Sohbi will be remembered for both her personal and professional legacy, and as a true force of nature. Known for her impeccable style and love of bling, her joie de vivre was unmistakable and infectious. Her influence will continue to be felt by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her two daughters, her sister, two granddaughters and son-in-law, and countless other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband and her brother.

A memorial service will be held on June 3, 2026 at the Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery in Honolulu, Hawai’i. Details on a Celebration of Life in Honolulu are being finalized and will be sent at a later date.

It's impossible to put into words Sohbi's impact on my life. We got to know each other through a mutual acquaintance, but thanks to her decision to hire me in a few projects, I got to know her as a boss, mentor and a life advisor. She taught me so many life lessons that my own parents never was able to give me - she occasionally joked that she was my "west coast mother".
I am blessed to have been able to spend so much time with her and her entire family. My life is so much greater thanks to her guidance, her mentorship and her friendship. I will miss her so much.
