Dorrett Atkins

Dorrett Angela Atkins, 76, of Miramar, Florida, passed away on October 8th, 2020 in Hollywood, Florida.

Dorrett Angela Atkins was born Morant Bay, Jamaica to the union of Juliet Victoria Francis and Trefusus Adolphus Phidd on November 17th, 1943. She graduated Excelsior High School, Kingston, Jamaica. She married her first husband, Kenneth Powell in 1961 in Kingston, Jamaica and he died in 1967. To that union was born four children.

She continued vocational training in bookkeeping/accounting in New York City and upon her return to Jamaica, she owned a night club in Morant Bay. She migrated again to the U.S. and worked as a bookkeeper for 10 years in Florida. Upon retiring, she returned to Jamaica and was an active member of Saint George’s Anglican Church, in Kingston. She later decided to return to the U.S. so she could spend time with her children and grandchildren.

Dorrett Angela Atkins is preceded in death by both parents, husband Kenneth Powell, siblings William Phidd, Eric Phidd, Susie Phidd-Baird, and Hyacinth Phidd-Bryant.

She is survived by Children: Marlon Powell, Michael Powell, Wayne Powell and Ann-Marie Campbell; Brothers: Kelvin, Richard and Winston; sister: Ivy; Grandchildren Danae, Ryan, Michael Evan, Alex, Lauren and Nicholas. Daughter-in-laws: Jacqueline and Marie; Son-in law: Christopher.

Dorrett, the youngest of ten children, had a big personality and a tremendous zest for life. She loved travelling, music, and dance. Some of her best moments were hosting family and friends at her home. A knack for cooking and baking, her home was the place to be. She was kind-hearted, loving and saw the best in all those around her. She enjoyed life to the fullest.
