Lifelong Mental Stimulation May Protect Against Alzheimer’s

Staying mentally engaged throughout life may lower your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in old age, according to a new analysis. The study found that people who pursue lifelong learning activities like reading and writing or learning a new language had a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. They also showed slower declines in memory and thinking skills as they aged.

“Our study looked at cognitive enrichment from childhood to later life, focusing on activities and resources that stimulate the mind,” said study author Andrea Zammit of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “Our findings suggest that cognitive health in later life is strongly influenced by lifelong exposure to intellectually stimulating environments.”

For the study, researchers assessed 1,939 healthy men and women whose average age was 80. None had Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia at the study’s start.

Participants filled out detailed questionnaires about their learning activities and resources during three periods of their lives: before age 18, in middle age, and late in life.  The early enrichment phase, before age 18, assessed such factors as how often they were read to as children and how much they read as teenagers, whether they had studied a foreign language for at least five years, and whether they had reference sources like atlases and newspapers in the home. The midlife enrichment period, around age 40, included information on household resources like magazine subscriptions and dictionaries, whether they had a library card and read books, and how often they visited museums or played board games. Late-life engagement, around age 80, assessed activities like reading, writing, and playing mentally challenging games.

Researchers followed participants for eight years. During that time, 551 developed Alzheimer’s disease. Another 719 developed mild cognitive impairment, a brain disorder marked by serious memory deficits that may be a precursor of full-blown Alzheimer’s.

After adjusting for dementia risk factors such as age and sex, the researchers found that adults who were in the top 10 percent of lifetime cognitive enrichment had a 38 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease compared to their peers in the bottom 10 percent. While lifelong learning lessened Alzheimer’s risk, it did not eliminate it: 21 percent of those in the top learning group developed Alzheimer’s, compared to 34 percent in the lowest learning group. Strong exposure to lifelong learning delayed the onset of Alzheimer’s by about five years, the researchers concluded.

Top learners also had a 36 percent lower risk of mild cognitive impairment compared to those with the lowest levels of lifelong learning. People with the highest lifetime enrichment developed mild cognitive impairment at an average age of 85, compared to age 78 for those with the lowest level of enrichment — a seven-year delay. The findings were reported in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

The study showed only an association between lifelong learning and better cognitive health and cannot prove cause and effect. But the findings add to growing evidence that mental stimulation, whether it’s through years of schooling or a mentally challenging job, is critical for helping to keep the mind sharp as we age. Tasks that challenge the brain are thought to bolster brain cells and the connections between them and build so-called cognitive reserve, which may protect against Alzheimer’s. As brain cells die because of the progression of Alzheimer’s, enough healthy cells and connections remain to compensate for the loss, at least for a time, the thinking goes.

Alzheimer’s is a years-long process, and many factors determine who develops dementia, including advancing age and the genes you inherit. Mental demands throughout life, the findings in this study suggest, may be another factor impacting cognitive health later in life, and may ultimately affect the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or at what age symptoms first appear.

“Our findings are encouraging, suggesting that consistently engaging in a variety of mentally stimulating activities throughout life may make a difference in cognition,” Dr. Zammit noted. “Public investments that expand access to enriching environments, like libraries and early education programs designed to spark a lifelong love of learning, may help reduce the incidence of dementia.”
