Join us in the fight against Alzheimer’s The numbers are staggering. Every 70 seconds someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease. It is now the fifth leading killer, and, disturbingly, Alzheimer’s diagnoses rose 47% from 2000 to 2006. More than half the U.S. population has been touched in some way by Alzheimer's. Science and research offer hope for finding better treatments and even a cure, but it is imperative that Congress increase federal funding for research. Join us in persuading Congress to make Alzheimer’s a National Priority. Here is a sample letter to send to your local member of Congress:
The Honorable xxx
Dear Senator (Congressman/woman) xxx,
I am writing as a constituent and as an advocate for the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, to encourage you to cosponsor and pass the following legislation that is so critical to confront the enormous challenge that Alzheimer’s disease poses to this nation today, and will increasingly pose in the future:
1. The National Alzheimer’s Project Act (S. 3036/H.R. 4689) which establishes The Office of the National Alzheimer’s Project and an integrated national plan to overcome Alzheimer’s disease.
2. The Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Act of 2009(S. 1492/H.R. 3286), makes Alzheimer’s research a priority for funding at the NIH, by increasing Alzheimer’s research funding to $2 billion.
3. The Alzheimer’s Detection, Diagnosis, Care and Planning (ADD-CAP) Act which will provide Medicare reimbursement to increase the detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
I appreciate your efforts in helping the Alzheimer’s community find better treatments and a cure by increasing funding, and making Alzheimer’s a national priority. It is our hope that these bills will facilitate research that may lead to the discovery of breakthrough treatments, and one day a cure for Alzheimer’s.
I also would appreciate it if you would let me know of the action that you take on this matter.
