Finding a Cure for Alzheimer's Nov 5, 2010
"Dr. Paul Greengard is closer than anyone else to finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. He invited Dr. Manny into his lab to find out more about his latest discovery which could help to abolish the condition."
Dr. Paul Greengard, together with his wife, the reknowned sculptor, Ursula von Rydingsvard, used his Nobel Prize honorarium to fund the Pearl Meister Greengard Prize, an award for women scientists named in honor of Greengard's mother, Pearl Meister Greengard, who died giving birth to him. The award is to combat discrimination against women in science, since, as Greengard observed, "Women are not yet receiving awards and honors at a level commensurate with their achievements."
When Carol Greider , recipient of the 2008 Pearl Meister Greengard Prize, won the 2009 Nobel Prize in science, Paul Greengard felt like a proud father. "This is explicitly one of our goals, to help women win the Nobel Prize and I never dreamed it would come so soon," Greengard said.
