Alzheimer's Resources For Planning Care
Planning care for a person who has Alzheimer's, or for yourself if you've recently
been diagnosed, can be a daunting, even frightening process. Getting the right
medical care, paying for healthcare, planning for long-term-care needs, negotiating
government benefits programs, getting one's financial and legal affairs in order
- all of this can overwhelm even the most organized person. Fortunately, you
don't have to go it alone.
There are professionals who can help you or your loved one plan and receive
the best care possible during a period when getting the best
care possible is of utmost importance. Geriatric
care managers and attorneys who specialize in elder
law are trained to serve the elderly and understand the
programs and services that are available to seniors. Local
agencies on aging can also help you find resources in
your community.
Geriatric Care Managers
Geriatric Care Managers (GCMs) are professionals with degrees in the field of human services (social work, psychology, gerontology) or substantial equivalent (i.e. RN), who are certified or licensed at the practice level in their state, with a specialized focus on issues related to aging and elder care. The GCM acts as a guide and advocate -- identifying problems and offering solutions.
Agencies on Aging
Each state in America has an agency on again. Their primary mission is to help older persons and persons with disabilities live with dignity and choices in their homes and communities for as long as possible.
