The National Funeral Directors Association

The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) is pleased to partner with the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation. The two organizations are working together to inform the public about Alzheimer's, advance efforts to find a cure for the disease, and help families plan for and cope during difficult times of loss.

NFDA understands the complex and uneasy feelings that occur when people think about planning a funeral for a loved one. NFDA funeral directors are there to offer help and guidance during one of life's most difficult times. As an association of the most caring and compassionate funeral directors in the country, NFDA members can help you create a meaningful, personalized funeral that reflects the life of your loved one.

The Benefits of Preplanning

Peace of mind is the number one reason that most people choose to preplan. There are also many other benefits you may want to consider: more time and a clearer perspective, receiving family input, avoiding family disagreements, emotional security, financial security, and relieving your family of important organizational and financial decisions during a period of stress and grief.

A Resource You Can Feel Comfortable and Confident With

To help you get started in the planning process, it is helpful to know your options. A good place to start is by contacting an NFDA member funeral director. These funeral directors adhere to a strict Code of Professional Conduct, which guarantees you the highest level of ethical and compassionate service. Locate an NFDA funeral home.

Consider Personalizing the Service

As you begin planning a funeral, let your loved one's life be your guide. Many people wish to personalize the funeral service and make it as unique as the person whose life they are celebrating. Whether a burial or cremation is chosen, a meaningful and personalized service is possible. Your creativity can help provide a lasting impression for loved ones. Here are some ideas for personalizing the service:

Incorporate personal effects
Play special and memorable music
Have meaningful speakers
Provide mementos for family and friends
Establish a memorial to honor your loved one
Allow family and friends to participate in the service

How much does a funeral cost?

The cost of a funeral varies and is dependent upon what you personally believe is valuable to the service. When considering the cost factor, keep in mind that the goal of the experience is to celebrate a life, giving family and friends a chance to reminisce and say goodbye.

Some individuals find that prepaying for the funeral can be beneficial, on both a personal and financial level. If you choose to prepay, NFDA has helpful consumer tips available, including our Consumer Preneed Bill of Rights.

NFDA has a variety of brochures available which cover a number of areas involved in planning a funeral. They include: Planning a Meaningful Funeral Service, Planning Your Funeral In Advance, Healing After the Loss of a Loved One, Helping Children Through Their Grief, and Understanding Cremation. Brochures are available by calling NFDA at 800-228-6332.
