Education & Awareness

ALZinfo.org

The Foundation's national comprehensive Alzheimer's Information Program, the heart of which is the Foundation's website, www.ALZinfo.org continues to spearhead efforts to increase awareness of and education about Alzheimer's disease to the general public. The website provides in depth information on the most current research studies, treatments, and disease management approaches. It incorporates the latest in scientific and social research with a unique Resource Locater feature for locating appropriate services in local areas. New Yorkers can find: doctors, nurses, disease centers, elder law attorneys, geriatric caregivers, home health agencies, Medicare information, New York aging agencies and more. The site also hosts "Expert Chats" with recognized leaders in the field of Alzheimer's on current topics of interest. The website is complemented by a 1-800-ALZINFO phone system that provides the same services to those who do not have access to the internet.

"Preserving Your Memory" Campaign

As we commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the discovery of Alzheimer's, The Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation is proud to announce the "Preserving Your Memory" campaign. The "Preserve Your Memory campaign" is an initiative to raise over $100 millions in the next 5 years - because without the dollars for the much needed research - we cannot preserve memories. Our goal is to continue the great strides research has been making toward conquering Alzheimer's disease.

Current Activities

Our Fisher Center laboratory is located at The Rockefeller University on York Avenue and 66th Street in New York City.

The Foundation also supports clinical research at the Fisher Alzheimer's Disease Education and Resources Program at the New York University Medical Center (the Program). Led by nationally recognized Alzheimer's care expert Barry Reisberg, M.D., investigators have developed a new approach to Alzheimer's care that addresses the basic mechanisms of the disease, resulting in new techniques for managing the disease. The thrust of the Program is to translate the advanced knowledge of the clinical symptomatology of Alzheimer's into improved caregiving. Retrogenesis, a concept developed by Dr. Reisberg is an innovative approach to the stages of Alzheimer's that addresses the basic mechanisms of the disease, and results in new techniques for managing patients as well. At The University of Genoa, Italy, researchers under the direction of neuroscientist Fabio Benfenati, Ph.D., are investigating the mechanisms by which nerve cells in the brain communicate, with the goal of enabling healthy cells to compensate for cells that have died in Alzheimer's and related diseases. Through the work of this program, tools and scales for research evaluation and a science of disease management for Alzheimer's were developed that are used in care settings around the world.

The NYU Fisher Alzheimer's Disease Program began Phase I of its trial study to demonstrate the efficacy of individualized, comprehensive, patient centered (ICPC) care in moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients receiving memantine, (Namenda) treatment. The goal is to provide ICPC care and assess its effect on patient cognition, functioning and mood so as to diminish the stress to patients and their caregivers in the later stages of the disease.

The Fisher Alzheimer's Disease Education and Resources Program at the New York University School of Medicine focuses on the care of people suffering from Alzheimer's.

Info RX

During the past year, the Foundation has launched other projects under the Alzheimer's Information Program. In partnership with the National Library of Medicine and the American Medical Association Foundation, we have continued to promote the Info Rx program. The program is an awareness and literacy campaign targeting physicians to refer patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's to reliable sources for information about the disease and resources available. The Foundation has developed a program, Keeping Your Mind Sharp, which targets seniors living in the community to acquaint them with how age affects memory and learning processes and ways to compensate. The program encourages healthy lifestyles that promote healthy brain cell development. It will be piloted in 5 regions across the country, New York, Wisconsin, Texas, California, and Florida.

Keeping Your Mind Sharp

Presently, the foundation is completing the final phase of a five state pilot program called “Keeping Your Mind Sharp,” an informative presentation that discusses the positive impact of stimulating mental activity, nutrition, physical exercise, social activity and a positive attitude on mental fitness.

The presentation outlines all of these important elements of successful aging and offers helpful tips for maintaining optimum memory acuity as we age. By viewing the presentation, participants will have a better understanding of the learning and memory process and how this process is affected by aging.

“Keeping Your Mind Sharp” also outlines the process of normal, age-related memory loss and normal changes in information processing as we age. It discusses more serious causes of memory loss, and what to do and where to go for assistance if you suspect that you or a loved one may have Alzheimer’s disease or another kind of dementia.

Mayoral Conference

Each year we sponsor the Mayoral Conference on Alzheimer's disease at the Jacob Javitz center - the largest conference on Alzheimer's in the U.S. This event is an opportunity for New York caregivers (both professional and familial) to receive the latest information on Alzheimer's. The conference offers them a place to gather much needed information and skills from the leading experts in the field of Alzheimer's care to make their lives just a bit easier.
