Miami to New York Row-for-Charity Seeks to Raise $50,000 for

Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation

Lewis Colam, 24-year-old former management consultant and novice rower from Plymouth, England, who watched a loved one succumb to Alzheimer’s disease, completed his 1,800 mile rowboat journey from Miami to New York to raise $50,000 for research of the disease on Tuesday, June 12 at approximately 3 p.m. at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located at 46th Street and 12th Avenue in Manhattan.

Since March 3rd, Lewis has rowed approximately 18 hours each day on his way to New York. With no prior rowing or seafaring experience, he carries no motor, sail, or fellow rower aboard his 15-foot open-decked row boat. Most nights, he anchors and sleeps aboard the boat, completely exposed to the elements.

So far, Lewis is approximately halfway to his fundraising goal of $50,000 that will support research at the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation. The Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation is a leading source of funding for Alzheimer’s research, support and education. In 2011, it received a coveted 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator. The Fisher Center was founded by Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher, who also founded the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum where Lewis will end his journey.

On Tuesday, June 12, Lewis reached the final leg of his journey leaving from near the Verrazano Bridge.  He rowed along the New Jersey shoreline, past the Statue of Liberty, and up the Hudson River, arriving at the Intrepid Museum at approximately 3 p.m., there he tied up to the pier and disembark from the rowboat.  Brief formal remarks from the President of the Fisher Center, Kent L. Karosen, were made.
