On June 5th, 2004, death ended former President Ronald Wilson Reagan's battle with Alzheimer's disease. Friends, family members, and political figures around the globe began paying tribute today to former President Ronald Reagan, one-time movie star and two-term world leader who became perhaps the best-known victim of Alzheimer's disease. He celebrated his 93rd birthday this past February 6, and suffered from Alzheimer's for more than 10 years before passing away at his home in Los Angeles.
More information about President Ronald Reagan and Alzheimer's disease can be found at the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation's website, www.ALZinfo.org.
The Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation serves as the nexus for the scientific laboratories of the Fisher Center at The Rockefeller University founded in 1995 by philanthropists Zachary Fisher and David Rockefeller. The Fisher Center laboratory is the cutting-edge research facility at The Rockefeller University, one of the largest, most modern and best-equipped scientific facilities for Alzheimer's research in the country.
World-renowned neuroscientist and Scientific Director of The Fisher Center, Paul Greengard, Ph.D., revolutionized our understanding of the molecular and cellular basis by which nerve cells communicate with one another, discoveries that earned him the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He and his research group at The Fisher Center have made fundamental contributions to our understanding of Alzheimer's disease.
Dr. Greengard has assembled a team of 60 outstanding scientists in more than 17 countries to help us understand the causes of Alzheimer's disease and develop novel approaches to its prevention, early detection and treatment.
The Fisher Center Foundation and the Fisher Center at The Rockefeller University remain committed to the eradication of this devastating disease. The loss of Ronald Reagan in public life for the past decade and his final surrender to Alzheimer's disease is a sobering reminder of the consequences suffered as scientists across the globe seek a cure.
"We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them as they prepared for their journey and waved good-bye and slipped the surly bonds of Earth to touch the face of God." Ronald Reagan address to the nation on the Challenger disaster, January 28, 1986
